Every
day, consignments of live animals and products of animal origin are imported
and traded in the European Union. In order that all such consignments can be
moved safely avoiding the transmission of diseases to either the public or
other animals, the EU has laid down a wide range of animal health requirements
and Member States may have additional national legislation to refer to.
Within
the Veterinary Regulation Directorate, the Unit which carries out controls on
live animals and products of animal origin is the Trade Unit.
