Identification and Registration of Ovine and Caprine

The ovine and caprine ear tag

Each ovine and caprine animal is identified with a unique number by means of two ear tags. Each ear tag bears the following information:
  • The two-letter country code for Malta – MT;
  • The Maltese logo;
  • A bar code;
  • A seven-digit number, of which the seventh digit is a check number.

The ovine/caprine holding register

Since the Maltese National Livestock Database contains all the information requested in Section B of the Annex to Council Regulation (EC) No. 21/2004 establishing a system for the identification and registration of ovine and caprine animals and amending Regulation (EC) No 1782/2003 and Directives 92/102/EEC and 64/432/EC and is thus fully operational, the Veterinary Regulation Directorate is abiding with the derogation as in Article 5 (4) of the same Regulation exempting producers from keeping a holding register for ovine and caprine.
