Responsibilities and functions of the Micro-chipping Office

The unit is responsible for the management and control of registration and identification of pets, mainly canines (dogs) and equines (horses). It is also responsible for the registration of dogs, which falls under Legal Notice 199 of 2011, which states that all dogs in the Maltese Islands have to be micro-chipped and registered. The micro-chipping Office is also responsible for the transfer of registered pets, when these change owners and the notification of deaths of such animals. The unit also controls and monitors the issuing and the registration of pet passports to private veterinarians and clinics.
