Conservation

The Plant Protection Directorate features a unit tasked with the conservation of genetic resources for food and agriculture. The aim of this unit, amongst others, is the implementation of some of the measures of the International Treaty for Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture, its complementary Second Global Plan of Action for Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (Second GPA) and various recommendations and voluntary guidelines emanating from the Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture. This unit currently features a plant tissue culture propagation laboratory, botanical gardens and several nurseries focusing on the preservation and multiplication of indigenous fruit trees, farmer’s varieties and other plants of interest to agriculture and conservation. In the coming years, the conservation of plant genetic resources for food and agriculture, including crop wild relatives and agricultural landraces, will be complemented by the establishment of an ex situ conservation facility and botanic museum. The gene bank, with the implementation of the measures of the International Plant Treaty, will assist in the simplification of access and benefit sharing obligations emanating from the same Treaty as well as the Nagoya Protocol to the Convention for Biological Diversity.
